The Saga of a Viking Longhouse in Iceland

Wed, Aug 10, 2011

Archaeology uncovers evidence that the viking sagas of Iceland may not be folk tales after all.

The Saga of a Viking Age Longhouse in Iceland is a documentary film by myself and Adam Fish for the UCLA department of Archaeology.

The primary question guiding the documentary is whether oral and written histories can help us understand the relics of the past.

Produced with Davide Marco Zori and Jesse Byock from the UCLA Archaeology Department for the Mosfell Archaeology Project at Hrísbrú in the Mosfell region of Southwestern Iceland. Additional archival footage from the Past Horizons project.

The Saga of a Viking Longhouse in Iceland

A photograph of Þjóðveldisbærinn in Iceland, a reconstruction of the Viking Longhouse Stöng. The building would have been the center of the farm of a Viking chief in the middle ages and would have been used to store food. This replica adheres as closely as possible to the original way of building these longhouses, with a basic wood frame, stone base and turf walls/roof. Courtesy Thomas Ormston, Wikimedia Commons.
