Few things are taught more formally than the excavation procedures itself; how to present research findings in a topic like archaeology is rarely taught. But the distance between good fieldwork and good communication is where discoveries are buried a second time.
Who is the Audience?
The first error researchers make is to create one presentation and deliver it every place. Technical shorthand, stratigraphic knowledge, and methodological detail can all be assumed in a specialist’s research findings presentation. What you present to a museum audience or to a financing panel needs an entirely different framing.
First, ask: What does this audience know already, and what do they need to decide? Significance and feasibility are what a grant committee wants to know.
